Are you struggling to reach your health and fitness goals? Have you joined a gym and not gone consistently or tried unsuccessfully to follow a number of diets? Are you an athlete looking for the right combination of nutrition and training to maximize performance? Or do you have high blood sugar or cholesterol and want to see if making lifestyle changes can prevent the need for medication?
Personal health coaching can help you reach your health and fitness goals. We’ll start by assessing your eating habits, activity level, weight status, medical history, risk factors for disease, and other lifestyle issues. Then we’ll develop an individualized eating, exercise and lifestyle plan targeted towards your goals. We’ll work together to implement our plan through a series of coaching sessions that include working through barriers you may encounter along the way.
Personal health coaching focuses on target health areas, like the ones listed below. There are a number of program options available, so you can find one that works best with your lifestyle and your goals.
Most health professionals agree that “dieting” does not result in long-term weight loss. Low calorie diets cause loss of muscle, slow metabolism, and trigger binge eating. In short, dieting sets you up for failure. Most experts agree that the most effective program of weight loss combines a nutritionally balanced eating plan, an enjoyable program of physical activity, and ongoing coaching to work through weight loss barriers. When all these elements are combined, weight loss becomes much easier and more permanent.
The proper diet can maximize training, improve performance and promote recovery. However, many active people find it difficult to eat nutritiously with their “eat-and-run” lifestyles. This can result in decreased energy for workouts, inability to lose body fat or gain muscle, and increased injury potential.
As a sports nutritionist, I develop individualized eating and exercise plans geared towards your lifestyle, nutrition needs and training goals. This includes monitoring body composition changes and adjusting your eating and training plan accordingly. If necessary, we’ll also address existing health issues such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar or dietary limitations like food allergies.
A societal emphasis on thinness, combined with an environment that promotes obesity, has led to an increase in the incidence of eating disorders. Anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating are complex issues requiring a multidisciplinary treatment approach. As a specialist in the areas of nutrition, exercise and behavioral counseling, I work with mental health professionals and physicians to support individuals in addressing these issues and helping them to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
Working through disordered eating issues is a challenging process, often involving long-term focused counseling and treatment. I work with my clients to determine a healthy weight goal, assess their nutritional needs and develop an individualized eating plan. As they approach their goal weight, we incorporate a balanced exercise program, work towards achieving a healthier body image, and continue to make progress towards a healthier lifestyle.
Are you one of the many “baby boomers” whose family history of diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure is catching up with you? The typical American lifestyle of frequent dining out, limited activity and a high-stress work environment can result in health problems at an early age. Obesity and elevated blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar are becoming a common occurrence for many adults. These risk factors can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, Type II diabetes, heart attack and stroke.
Many of my clients are able to reduce their risk factors through lifestyle intervention. They learn to make healthier eating choices, adopt a more active lifestyle and develop constructive ways to manage their stress. Through personal health coaching, we are able to work through their barriers, allowing them to achieve a healthier lifestyle. If you’re motivated to reduce your risk factors using a lifestyle approach, then personal health coaching may be the answer for you!
